A Northern Sound System & Helpmann Academy Collaboration

Helpmann Academy is thrilled to partner with The Northern Sound System (NSS) to deliver SONGS: A Northern Sound System & Helpmann Academy Collaboration.

SONGS, a song-writing intensive, will combine leading South Australian music producers, emerging original artists and graduates from South Australia’s leading music education institute, the University of Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium of Music to write an original work each day. Producers, graduates and artists have the chance to work with new teams daily, producing new music and expanding their creative networks.

Final year students and graduates (up to 5 years from final year of study) from Elder Conservatorium of Music are invited to apply to participate in the immersive program, running from 27 September – 1 October 2021. Over the week, the successful artists will work with established producers including Godlands, Adam Page, and Nic Wilson (EAST AV3) (with more to be announced soon) alongside contemporary songwriter/vocalists. This is rare opportunity to collaborate and connect with a diverse range of musicians and experience new music creation processes. Emerging artists who are not Elder Conservatorium graduates may apply for the program through NSS.

The song writing intensive model is based on the nationally renowned ‘50 Songs’ program run by Specific Music at Sydney’s 301 Studio’s and like founder Robert Conley said in The Music Network “…the musical outcomes are awesome, but what we love most is helping to build the community spirit.”

“I loved being thrown in the deep end each day and having to quickly find that collaborative rapport with a totally different artist. I don’t think I’ve ever done such fast, productive sessions before and it’s just such a positive environment for it!” Lonelyspeck, previous SONGS producer

“Songs was a great program which helped me to build connections and broaden my musical approach. I loved the process of sitting down with a different group each day and building something beautiful from that.” Daniel Isler, previous SONGS participant

NSS has been supporting South Australian artists develop for over a decade and has played a role in the careers of high calibre artists such as Tkay Maidza, George Alice, TOWNS, MANE, Pinkish Blu, Teenage Joans and more.

The SONGS model has been running at NSS for the last 3 years, featuring producers such as Memphis LK, Luke Million, Lonelyspeck, Stellie, Bethan Madison, Dec and Fazz alongside artists Sonz of Serpent, Katie Aspel, Estee Evangeline, Marlon and Rulla, Sokel and Barnabas.

Writing teams will create a new track each day and present their work at a listening party each evening. By the end of the week the team will have created a 25 track body of work made available to participants on a private Soundcloud playlist.

Helpmann Academy is excited to join forces with NSS to extend this unique program, with the shared goals of:

  • building networks between creatives in South Australia
  • making space for musicians to create and grow as artists
  • exposing contemporary practice to emerging creatives
  • sharing new and exciting creative voices with the wider community
