Helpmann Academy and UKARIA are hosting an exclusive masterclass with John Bell AO, OBE of Australia’s national theatre company specialising in the works of Shakespeare – the Bell Shakespeare company.

John founded The Bell Shakespeare Company in 1990 where he served as Director until 2015. His productions include over 15 of Shakespeare’s greatest works, which have been played to almost 2.5 million Australians. The Bell Shakespeare Company currently resides at the Sydney Opera House.

John Bell is one of Australia’s most illustrious theatre personalities and has been a key figure in shaping the nation’s theatrical identity as we know it over the past 50 years.

Interested drama students and graduates will experience an acting masterclass designed specifically for the Helpmann Academy, in the stunning surrounds of UKARIA Cultural Centre.

This is an exceptional opportunity to take part in an intimate Shakespeare masterclass with the master of Shakespeare.

We are seeking expressions of interest from eligible students and graduates to be immersed in this masterclass.

OPTION 1 – WORK ON STAGE WITH JOHN BELL

  • We are seeking six actors who are eligible* drama graduates to work directly on stage with John Bell.
  • You will be required to learn and memorise a short Shakespearean text, in preparation for performing with John on stage.
  • You will be provided with a list a selected text to choose from.
  • This hands-on experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity for an emerging actor, to work and learn from John in an intimate setting.
  • You will also be a part of the Q&A session.

*Please note that the eligibility for this opportunity has been expanded to up to seven years from your final year of study.

OPTION 2 – AUDIENCE MEMBER

  • We are seeking 20 final year drama students interested in observing the masterclass as an audience member.
  • This is an exceptional opportunity to witness John Bell deliver an acting masterclass with a small group of recent drama graduates.
  • You will also be a part of the Q&A session.
