The Emerging Curator Program

Presented in partnership with the City of Adelaide

The Emerging Curator Program is an exciting opportunity for two emerging curators to undertake a number of exhibition projects over a 6-month period, for various City of Adelaide exhibition spaces, and the 2019 Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition.

The selected emerging curators will be mentored by Liz Nowell (CEO, ACE Open) across all aspects of the program, providing direction in developing the curatorial rationale, artist selection and public programming, project management, liaising with venue staff, and installation. Administrative support will be provided by Helpmann Academy.

Encompassing a variety of different spaces, the curators will have the opportunity to curate two exhibitions in each venue, with an approximate display period of 3-months each.

The Spaces include:

  • 1st Floor Gallery at the Adelaide Town Hall
  • Mankurri-api Kuu (Reconciliation Room, Adelaide Town Hall)
  • The Art Pod, Pirie Street, Adelaide
  • Breezeway Soundscape, Pirie Street, Adelaide

The artworks for the exhibition can either be commissioned or loaned from artists.

In addition to the City of Adelaide spaces, one of the selected emerging curators will have the opportunity to also work on the design and installation of the 2019 Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition, under the guidance and mentorship of Logan Macdonald (Public Art Planner, City of Adelaide).

Each emerging curator will receive a curator’s fee of $3,000. An additional budget will be available to provide and manage artist fees, and installation costs.

An additional fee will be payable to the curator who undertakes on the Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition mentorship.

The program provides invaluable opportunities for the emerging curators to develop their skills in curatorial work, build networks within the South Australian arts community, and develop their profile as a curator. Working with the mentors will allow for a unique learning environment, with access to extensive experience, knowledge, and guidance.
