George Street Studio Residency

17 July 2019

The Helpmann Academy in partnership with George Street Studios is thrilled to announce the recipients of the George Street Studios Residency.

Adelaide College of the Arts (TAFE SA) / Flinders University graduate Nat Penney and University of South Australia graduate Eleanor Amor have both been awarded a six-month studio residency at the George Street Studios.

Beginning in July 2019, the residency is the second iteration of this program and will see both emerging creatives embed their practice in the Thebarton studio – known for its specialised space, machinery and shared knowledge of its permanent residents.

Emerging installation artist Eleanor Amor is excited to expand her skills while engaging with a community of professional artisans. She said:

“As a recent graduate and emerging artist, I want to push myself to make great work, build a community of inspiring peers and immerse myself in my visual arts practice. I’m hoping this residency will not only provide me with the facilities to expand my skill set in the workshop but will also allow me to meet new makers and build close connections with other artists working in Adelaide. I would have never imagined working in such a well-equipped studio would be possible for me at such an early stage of my career as an artist.”

Emerging sculpture artist Nat Penney is looking forward to expanding her skills and learning new ways to incorporate them within her current practice. She said:

“My initial direction will be toward methods of timber furniture making, especially joinery, and seeing where I can apply these processes to my kinetic sculptural works. I have a big soft spot for the satisfying nature of timber work and can’t wait to get my hands in there. I hope I’ll be able to combine these more traditional styles of making with my unorthodox ones and start moving into less familiar territory, in the search for unexpected conditions to shake me up a bit.”
