Keep our creative pulse beating strong

Our global community is currently experiencing a challenge as we have never seen before. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced entire industries to pivot their offerings, lest they are wiped out. In the arts community, creatives are facing the cancellations of gigs, exhibitions and performances, as their careers are put on hold indefinitely.

Artists like musician Mallory Steele, who has lost a year of paid gigs and exposure. She says, “I was planning on using the last few months to play lots of small live gigs, networking with other bands to increase our audience and further promote the EP that we released in December. Covid-19 means a loss of income, exposure and momentum.”

Emerging sculptor/visual artist Kate Bohunnis is dealing with the postponement and cancellation of a number of large projects, adding, “With a halt on income, having large projects postponed with the uncertainty of new dates and many opportunities being withdrawn or postponed, it has been almost impossible to continue working with enthusiasm and confidence. Not only is it integral to be able to financially nourish your practice, but it is also essential to hold onto the confidence and curiosity to continue seeking opportunities and methods of learning.”

For theatre-maker and puppeteer Lachlan Barnett, the pause on a flourishing career is a cause for serious concern, as he worries about regaining that momentum. He says, “The first five years of an artist’s career are vital in ensuring a strong foundation and network for future artistic practice. I have worked tirelessly to get where I thought I was heading this year and I am not ready to sit back and give up.”

On one hand, it’s difficult to not feel isolated in our struggles, but on the other, this is an opportunity for our community to engage with each other in meaningful ways.

This end of financial year, we are calling on our community to keep South Australia’s creative pulse beating strong.
