Project Curator: 2022 Graduate Exhibition

15 October 2020

The Helpmann Academy is thrilled to announce the Project Curator for the 2022 Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition, Lucy Zola.

Lucy is a multidisciplinary artist and a graduate from the University of South Australia, who creates multifaceted, immersive works that explore themes surrounding identity, mental health and the environment. As well as being an artist, Lucy has co-curated three exhibitions to date, with the latest ‘Accent’ debuting at Urban Cow Studio in May 2021.

Lucy will be undertaking a mentorship with Curatorial Mentor, Patrice Sharkey (Artistic Director, ACE Open) to mount the 2022 Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition. As the Project Curator recipient, Lucy’s duties will range from assisting with selections, designing the layout, working with artists, and installation and de-installation over the period from November 2021 to February 2022.

Lucy says she is looking forward to collaborating with and learning from the teams at both ACE Open and Helpmann.

“Curating encompasses three of my favourite things: creativity, organisation and working with people, so I am excited by a lot of aspects of this role! Working with Patrice, Becci, Jane and the ACE and Helpmann teams will really help me to expand my skills as a curator, so I am very excited to work alongside, and learn from them and their experience in the industry. Another component I am especially looking forward to is planning the exhibition space and layout of the works. I love exhibitions that showcase multidisciplinary works, such as the graduate exhibition at Helpmann, so I am eager to work out how to best showcase works in a way that complements each medium’s inherent qualities.”

Lucy will be supported through her mentorship with Patrice Sharkey to develop her understanding of how to design a space, communicate with exhibiting artists, oversee an installation, and create a cohesive and impactful exhibition.

The 2022 Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition runs from Thursday 17 February to Saturday 19 March February 2021 at ACE Open, Lion Arts Centre, North Terrace.
